Anyone who has moved to a Vancouver zip code in the last decade knows that it is one of the most expensive cities in the world in terms of real estate. This isn't simply the result of people's desire to live in a city that is clean and picturesque, although Vancouver is certainly both. Rather, it is because Vancouver has been a booming centre on the west coast of Canada for the past 20 years. It's one of the richest cities in the nation, thanks in large part to the diverse businesses and industries that make up the economic backbone of the city. Thanks to these and other sectors, the class action lawyers and other professionals can set up shop.
Natural Resources
The province of British Columbia has always been rich in natural resources. There is timber, coal, copper, oil, agricultural products, and other resources shipped by the ton each year. And almost all of those products eventually make their way to Vancouver for processing and international shipping. This means that the port in the city is kept busy all year long, and that many of the companies in charge of resource extraction have their headquarters located in Vancouver. It's not uncommon to see a mining baron talking on his Blackberry, roaming the high end districts of Burnaby or Gastown.

Film Industry
Vancouver has been labelled Hollywood North because of the popularity of the city for production in both television and film. It's a good place to get a start in the industry for anyone with visual arts experience, from graphic designers to a wedding photographer. Burlington Ontario and other provincial rivals hope to take a share of the film business away from Vancouver through tax incentives, but the natural appeal of the city may stand in the way of these attempts.
Tourism
Located on the Pacific Ocean and with the largest venues to be found in Canada west of the Air Canada Centre, Vancouver is a tourism hot spot. Businesses operating in this sector are set to see even more profitable days ahead, as the Olympics come to Vancouver in 2010. Already, hotel WiFi connections have been put in place to give the hospitality industry the most modern appeal possible. With every room booked and more people looking for space, the Olympics are guaranteed to increase the exposure of Vancouver businesses based on tourism.
High Tech
The presence of several high level upper educational facilities as well as close proximity to Seattle and other notable tech towns have benefited Vancouver's economy. It is the birth place of Sage software and several other well known high tech companies.
Realty
And of course, where there is a good market, there will be a strong realty business presence. The Sutton members program operates in full force here, as do the incentive measures of the other major brokerages of Canada.
